Emergency services crews take cover as Marcia strikes

By Mark Beale

ALL emergency service crews will be taken off the roads soon, which is why it is crucial for people to remain in their homes as the Cyclone Marcia hits Yeppoon, Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk has warned.

“Within the next hour, emergency service personnel, their local commanders will make the decision that they will be taken off the roads and they need to be safe as well,” she said.

“So we want everyone now to be back in their homes.

“Go to the strongest part of your homes, where there is a bathroom and toilet, make sure you have pillows and mattresses and please be safe. This is the most crucial time over the next couple of hours.”

There are currently 600 people at the Yeppoon cyclone shelter.

There are also evacuation centres at Yeppoon, including at the PCYC and St Brendan’s.

Airports in the area have been closed and will remain closed.
