Culture is rewarded

THIS year’s Australia Day Senior Cultural award went to the soaring voices and vivacious energy of local over 50’s choir the Choral C Voices.

The Choral C Voices choir is made up of around 30 people who practice weekly at the PCYC and work hard at learning new and classic songs to sing.

The fun, social group is directed by Cannonvale resident Steve Janicki and is described as being for women and men who share a love of music and enjoy singing at a range of community events in the Whitsundays.

In 2014 the Choral C Voices delighted local residents with a live performance for the Proserpine Nursing Home and the Whitsunday Probus Club, as well as their performances at events such as the Candle Light Service, Lions Seniors Mothers Day Morning Tea, Relay for Life, Lions Airlie Beach Community Markets, the Rotary Club of Airlie Beach Carols by the Beach and more.

Laura Robson was honoured to receive this year’s Junior Cultural Award.

Laura, who played in the Proserpine Citizen’s Band during Monday’s ceremony, has been an integral member of the Proserpine State High School’s music and instrumental music program throughout 2014.

Not only does she play several instruments in the school band, she has been an invaluable member of the choir and she was voted by her peers as band captain in 2014. Laura’s involvement in music extends beyond school in the State Honours Ensemble from 2011-2014 which resulted in her being invited to attend and perform at the Pacific Honours Ensemble Program in Seattle, US.

In addition to her musical ability, Laura has been actively involved in the Student Council and she volunteers for the Rotary Club of Proserpine, Reef Festival, Anglican Opportunity Shop, Proserpine State School Fete and a range of school events.
