Council to assist Cannon Valley Rural Fire Brigade with fire station

By Mark Beale

Whitsunday Regional Council today resolved to assist the Cannon Valley Rural Fire Brigade (CVRFB) to secure land for the construction of a fire station.

Mayor Jenny Whitney said as part of this resolution Council also approved the exploration of a conversion of the road reserve at the Gregory/Cannon Valley and Shute Harbour intersection as an option for the CVRFB fire station.

“The Cannon Valley Rural Fire Brigade approached Council asking for assistance in finding suitable land of approximately 1,000m2 to house a fire station in the Mt Marlow/Riordanvale area,” she said.

“The brigade has been operational for nearly three years, is steadily growing in size and is in need of a station to adequately service the growing local community.

“Queensland Fire and Emergency Services have also indicated they will assist the fire brigade with the funding required to construct the facility as they have an interest in using the facility as a regional communications hub during an emergency.

“Council officers are happy to assist the brigade with planning approvals, including conversion of the road reserve.

“There is no timeframe available from State Department of Natural Resources and Mines, however the reserve conversion may take up to six months and require public consultation prior to granting approval,” she said.
