Tassal Group Airlie Beach Marathon Festival Returns On 16th & 17th Of July

By Ray White Whitsunday

After the great success of last year’s event, the Tassal Group have come on board for a second year to sponsor the Airlie Beach Marathon Festival in 2022.

Tassal Group produce premium quality Australian tiger prawns under the Tropic Co brand right here in The Whitsundays and are a major employer in our region.

The Athletics North Queensland Championship Marathon is the feature race of the Airlie Beach Marathon Festival. The 2021 marathon field was the biggest to date and even more athletes are expected this year.

The program for the 2022 festival follows last year’s successful format and will cater for all ages from 4 years old and up. It features races over 1 mile, 1km, 2km, 5km, 10km, 21.1km and 42.2km.

The Event Manager and President of the Whitsunday Running Club, Tim McQuoid-Mason said entries for this year opened on 1 January and with the support of Tassal Group and the other sponsors we expect a great turn out in July.

The festival will start on Saturday 16 July with the Airlie Beach Foreshore Magic Mile to be run at 4:00pm. There is prize money for the fastest male and female and ribbons awarded in the 6 to 9 and 10 to 15 year age groups.

Sunday 17 July will be the busy day with the marathon, half marathon, 10km, 5km, and kids 2 and 1km races to be run, starting with the marathon at 6:00am.

The first three places in the marathon and half marathon will all receive prize money with their trophies.

The winning school with the most participation will receive a donation to go towards sports equipment.

The charity of choice for this year’s festival is the Ronald McDonald House Charities, North Australia.

Tourism Whitsundays Chief Executive Officer, Rick Hamilton believes the Airlie Beach Marathon Festival is held in the best destination in the world.

“Where else can you enjoy a marathon with 74 island wonders to admire, bordered by the Great Barrier Reef while making the most of the tropical resort town of Airlie Beach?

“It’s time to put on your running shoes because this is not an event to be missed,” Mr Hamilton said.
